Welcome to

Spring Hill Cemetery

Spring Hill Cemetery is nestled under a large granite outcrop in the hamlet of Spring Hill in the Shire of Hepburn, about 77kms from Melbourne.

The Dja Dja Wurrung are the Traditional Owners of the land.

The Cemetery can be accessed from Spring Hill Road by turning left 500 metres from the Spring Hill CFA. Google reference circa – 460 Spring Hill Road.

Spring Hill Cemetery was established in 1871. Since then, there have been approximately 170 interments, however many wooden grave markers were destroyed by fire in the 1800s. The Cemetery is still in use today and treasured by locals as a small bushland-style cemetery. There are no formal amenities – just rambling paths through wildflowers, with local wildlife enjoying the untouched forest. Occasionally you’ll see a pair of wedge-tailed eagles gliding above.

To arrange a burial please contact Gill Walker 0419 525 009, and for general non urgent enquiries please e-mail info@springhillcemetery.com.au

Deceased search and plot map

The cemetery’s records were digitalised in May 2022. Graves are marked in rows and numbers as logically as possible given the terrain of the site. There are many unmarked graves where we have records of internment but no specific burial locations available. Please note all attempts have been made to make our digital records are as accurate as possible and if you find errors we apologise and invite you to please contact us to amend. Cemetery supporters

Spring Hill Cemetery is managed by a small group of locals who donate their time to administer the Trust and keep the Cemetery tidy. Tracey Matters is the Trust Secretary; Gill Walker our Trust Chairperson and Dianne Stannard is our helpful historian.

The cemetery relies on its volunteers and financial grants to remain operational.

If you’d like to support the local community by attending a working bee or making a much- appreciated financial donation, then please contact Tracey on info@springhillcemetery.com.au.

Cemetery guidelines

Approval must be obtained from the Spring Hill Cemetery Trust for the interment of bodily remains or cremated remains to be buried at the Spring Hill Cemetery. The correct form must be completed before approval is given. Unauthorised interment is a punishable offence.  Application forms can be found:

Any memorials on the site must be approved by the Cemetery Trust.

Floral tributes

The Trust allows both fresh and artificial flowers to be placed at the grave/monumental site. After two weeks any floral tributes that are non-biodegradable may be removed and disposed of at the discretion of the Trust. Vases and containers from glass, ceramic or other brittle material are not permitted and will be removed for safety reasons.

Tree memorials

No trees are permitted to be planted on the site.  Approval for the planting of small indigenous shrubs, flowers or grasses must first be obtained, prior to planting, in writing from the Trust. The Trust reserves the right to remove any trees, shrubs and invasive plant species as deemed necessary. The cost of removal may be borne by the person or persons responsible for the planting.

It is the policy of the Spring Hill Cemetery Trust that temporary grave markers may only be used for a maximum of twelve (12) months, then either replaced with an approved monument or the grave left unmarked.

Vehicle access

The Trust does not permit any bicycles, motorbikes or private vehicles to enter the Cemetery grounds without prior approval. The exceptions to this policy are Funeral Director vehicles and hearse, monumental mason vehicles, contractors employed by the Trust, and mourners at a funeral.

Spring Hill Cemetery Fees

We are an old cemetery with unmarked graves and rocky terrain.  We will do our best to accommodate location requests, but the exact location of a burial cannot be confirmed until time of grave excavation.  Should a site be excavated and remains found, then this site will not be re-used and an alternative site option discussed with the family.

All costs relating to the final grave excavation are the responsibility of the burial applicant, family or representative. We strongly discourage double-depth graves due to the terrain and geology of the cemetery location and recommend side-by-side placement.

Due to limited space at the cemetery, the Trust is only accepting ‘at-need’ burial applications for new plots. ‘Pre-need’ burial applications will continue to be accepted only for relatives of existing plot holders.
